Scheme End

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides subsidised grants to homeowners in England and Wales who want to replace outdated fossil fuel heating systems with cleaner, more efficient low-carbon alternatives. Whether your motivation is cost savings, environmental responsibility, or both, the BUS provides meaningful financial support to make the transition more accessible.

What the Scheme Funds

Eligible homeowners receive a grant to contribute towards the purchase and installation of a qualifying low-carbon heating solution. Currently, the scheme funds air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, and biomass boilers — all of which deliver substantially lower carbon emissions than traditional gas, oil, or LPG systems.

Grant values were increased in September 2023. Successful applicants can now receive up to £7,500 towards a ground or air source heat pump, and up to £5,000 towards a biomass boiler installation.

Why Upgrade Your Heating System?

Modern low-carbon heating systems are considerably more efficient than ageing fossil fuel alternatives — meaning less energy is consumed to achieve the same level of comfort, translating directly into lower annual energy bills.

Beyond cost savings, replacing a fossil fuel heating system reduces the harmful carbon dioxide emissions your home produces. The UK government is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050, and individual upgrades across the housing stock collectively play a significant role in reaching that target.

For properties with ageing boilers, high maintenance costs, or deteriorating performance, the BUS represents an ideal opportunity to invest in a future-proof, lower-cost heating solution.

Eligibility Requirements

The scheme is available to homeowners in England and Wales who currently heat their property using oil, gas, electric, solid fuel, or LPG. Your property must hold a current Energy Performance Certificate, and there must be no outstanding recommendations for cavity wall or loft insulation at the time of application.
